Breaking: Fire closes George Town landfill

The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) on Wednesday said that the George Town Landfill was closed due to a fire.

The closure is a result of the  fire which erupted in the main landfill between 12 and 12.30 p.m. today.

Cayman Islands Fire Service arrived quickly on the scene and is working assiduously to extinguish the blaze that started near the top of the landfill.

Fire officers with the Central and West Bay fire stations, along with off-duty fire personnel, are currently on the scene.

The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service’s helicopter was deployed and is using thermal imaging equipment to assess the fire.

DEH anticipates that the smoke will be eliminated by the end of the day as all the necessary measures are in place to deal with the situation.

A detailed report is to be provided as soon as a full assessment is carried out by DEH’s operations team.
