Recovered vessel and packages.
Just before 10PM on Tuesday 6 August, about 11 miles off the shore of East End and within the Cayman Islands jurisdictional waters, the Air Operations Unit (AOU) spotted a boat that had one occupant and what appeared to be several packages on board. This raised the suspicions of the officers of the Joint Marine Unit. Although the vessel attempted to evade them, it was intercepted with the assistance of the AOU.
A search was conducted of the vessel and over 40 packages containing what the officers believed to be ganja was on board. The occupant, a 32-year-old-man of Cayman Brac, was arrested on suspicion of importation of marijuana along with other drug related offenses. The vessel and its contents were seized and an investigation was launched into the matter.
The estimated weight of the ganja recovered from the vessel was in excess of 1200lbs with an estimated street value of over $1 million CI dollars.
The 32-year-old-man from Cayman Brac has since been charged and was expected to appear in court today on charges of importation of ganja and Possession of ganja.
