Cayman: Severe weather with flooding expected today
The National Hurricane Center in Miami Florida is issuing an advisories on Tropical Storm Zeta. Rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches with local amounts of 12 inches are possible through Tuesday along and east-northeast of Zetas track across the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, the Cayman Islands, and central to western Cuba.
At 4 am Zeta was located about 195 miles WSW of Grand Cayman. Zeta is moving northwest at 9 mph over the next 2 days, taking the system further away from the Cayman Islands.
Observations from a NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that maximum sustained winds are near 70 mph (110 km/h) with higher gusts. Strengthening is forecast, and Zeta is expected to become a hurricane later this morning. Additional strengthening is expected before Zeta moves over the Yucatan Peninsula. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles (185 km) from the center. The latest minimum central pressure reported by a NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft data is 992 mb (29.29 inches).
Today should bring cloudy to overcast skies with rain and intermittent thunderstorms. Showers may become locally heavy at times leading to possible flooding of low lying areas. Isolated thunderstorms and rough seas are expected to continue for the next 24 hours in association with Tropical Storm Zeta. Showers are expected to become heavy at times.
Radar images show widely scattered showers in and around the Cayman area which are moving towards the northwest. Temperatures will rise to the upper 80’s °F. Winds will be south to southeast 15 to 20 knots with higher gusts in and around heavy showers.
Tonight will bring cloudy skies with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Showers may become locally heavy at times. Temperatures will fall to the mid 70’s °F. Winds will be southeasterly 15 to 20 knots with higher gusts in and around heavy showers. Seas will be rough with wave heights of 4 to 6 feet, with an additional 2 to 3 feet swells are expected along the West coast of Grand Cayman.
A flood warning is in effect for the Cayman islands and will remain into effect until tonight. A small craft warning is also in effect until Tuesday morning.
