Contrast Exhibit Reflects on Past and Present

Most on Grand Cayman have appreciated Carlos V Garcia’s art whether they knew it or not. The self-taught artist created many murals across island adding color and character to our streets—just look at his murals at The Kimpton Seafire Resort, Prospect Primary School, Margaritaville, Atlantis Submarines, and Cayman Turtle Center, to name a few. Building on his local success Garcia scaled his larger than life passion to fit inside to create Contrast his first art exhibit.

Contrast by Garcia celebrates the juxtaposition of past meeting present. Garcia explains “I indulge viewers by drawing inspiration from the meeting place of modernity and history in contemporary Cayman society.”  In this exhibit Garcia uses a variety of media such as acrylic, newspaper, furniture and time, to provoke viewers into reflection.

Originally from La Ceiba Honduras Garcia began exploring art in 2008, growing his skill over the years. In 2013 Garcia joined La Ceiba’s street art scene. Then in 2017 began painting colorful murals on Grand Cayman for all to appreciate. In 2019 Garcia was selected to paint for Kaaboo becoming the only local resident to join the Kaaboo Artist Crew.

Over the years Garcia has perfected his style—which he calls ‘abstract-realism’. Garcia pulls on the truth of reality and at times embellishes it with color, fantasy, and romance creating art that truly celebrates the world around him. In this case Garcia is honoring Cayman’s past and present drawing attention to the contrast between.

Contrast is open for all to see at The Space in Caymanian Village from Saturday Dec 7 onward.
