Get ready for Hurricane season with these essential supplies

Hurricane season is here and after witnessing the destruction some of our brothers and sisters had to endure from Hurricanes Irma and Maria, no one should be left unprepared.  Whether or not you live in an island prone to hurricanes, it just makes sense to be ready and not be caught unawares. So here is a checklist of items you should have and things you need to have in place should you, too, become a victim of a Hurricane.

Emergency Medical Kit: Get a waterproof container and stock up on items such as adhesive and non-adhesive bandages, non-prescription and prescription drugs, antacids, antibacterial ointments for cuts and bruises, antiseptic spray, latex gloves, scissors, gauze, thermometer, Hydrogen peroxide etc

Sanitation supplies: Bucket with lid, mop, disinfectant, bug spray, bleach, liquid detergent, garbage bags

Water: It is recommended that you cater a gallon a day per person up to a week.

Food: Non-perishable items, tin food preferably with ring tops, non-electric can opener, snacks, paper plates and cups, baby food, pet food

Toiletries: Diapers, wipes, deodorant, special items for the elderly, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, toilet paper.

Clothing and bedding: raincoats, sturdy boots, Blankets and pillows, umbrellas

Radio: Get a wind-up, solar powered radio, battery operated radio in the event you lose electricity

Cash: Keep some cash available in the event you are unable to use the bank or ATM

Documents: Birth papers, updated passports, house and land deeds, wills, marriage certificates, Insurance certificates, medical records etc should be kept in a waterproof bag and where you can easily grab it if you need to.

Insurance: Make sure your home is insured in the event of any destruction.

Special items: Tarpaulin, plastic sheeting, toolkit, sandbags, generator, lafshlight and batteries, fire extinguisher

Pet care:  cage or carrier, medication, leash, ID tag, food and water.
