Grenada PM: Region must be prepared for Covid-19

All Caribbean countries need to be prepared should the Coronavirus (Covid-19) infiltrate the region.

This is the view of Grenada’s Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell who confirms the virus is not in his country at this point in time.

“God help us that we continue to have none of it.

The entire Caribbean region has reported that it is not present in any of the islands.

Remember, if there is one incident of the virus in any country, they say the Caribbean and we can all get hurt,” said Prime Minister Mitchell.

He says it is an issue that all citizens should be prepared for in every respect, not just Grenada, but all countries in the Caribbean.

The Grenadian Prime Minister notes that at the recent Inter-Sessional Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government, Covid-19 was an issue of concern for all leaders, particularly as it relates to misinformation.

Dr Mitchell says propaganda is not needed as sometimes information shared can give the impression that the Coronavirus is already present and could cause persons to be overly sceptical about people of Chinese origin.

Grenada’s Prime Minister believes when it comes to issues of health, all persons should be on one platform as opposed to being divided.

As of February 22, a fifth Grenadian national, a student, was quarantined as a precautionary measure after returning from mainland, China.

Grenada is also currently on an Importation Transmission Watch (ITW), as Grenadian Health Authorities have expanded their surveillance over a wider area of travel to affected areas.

A statement from the Health Ministry said the Importation Transmission Watch includes assessing exposure to risks, monitoring events in the region, and providing pre-travelling training.

The Ministry notes pre-trip risk assessment, education and preparation can markedly reduce the likelihood of an incident disrupting normal everyday life, trade, and travel.
