A report by News Source Guyana, State Minister Joseph Harmon, said Thursday during a post-Cabinet briefing that an investigation has been launched.
He said that police had disclosed information in which there may have been a plot to shoot President Granger during one of his recent outreaches and a probe was launched.
Harmon said investigators are currently seeking the advice of the Police Legal Adviser on the matter, adding that he was not able to disclose details.
He said that although President Granger has positive ratings, there may be those opposed to his administration.
“It is important that we understand that while we have a popular President, we always have to be careful.”
Harmon said Guyana's government has full confidence in members of all of the security forces to protect the President and other ministers.
The report said information regarding the possible assassination plot was received about two weeks ago, and may have resulted in a heightened security presence during the last sitting of the National Assembly.
