Watch: Tsunami warning issued after magnitude earthquake

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck in the sea between Cayman, Jamaica and Cuba, sending shockwaves across the islands.

Buildings were evacuated as the quake hit the islands this afternoon.

The Cayman Islands were reportedly 251 km from the epicentre.

The centre of the quake was a relatively shallow six miles beneath the surface of the ocean, prompting fears of damage as shallower earthquakes tend to be more destructive.

Citizens near the shore and in low-lying areas have been put on alert.

According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, tsunami waves as high as a metre are possible along some coasts including in the Cayman Islands.

The quake was reportedly felt as far away as south Florida.
