Update On the Petition Verification Process And The Port

Verification staff from the Elections Office have received 83.4% of the number of verified signatures required to satisfy Section 70 (2) of the Cayman Islands Constitution in relation to peoples-initiated referendum.

Verification staff from the Elections Office have received 83.4% of the number of verified signatures required to satisfy Section 70 (2) of the Cayman Islands Constitution in relation to peoples-initiated referendum.

Status of Signature Verification Process

On Saturday the elections office verified signatures at the Fosters Airport location, bringing the new total of positively verified signatures to 4,413 with 879 signature-verifications left to arrive at the 5,292 signatures required for a referendum. This process is now 83.4% complete.

The Elections Office has offered additional verification locations as per the image above.

RFP Issued for “Public Education Campaign”

On August 6th, the Ministry of District Administration, Tourism and Transport (DATT) issued a Request for Proposals for a Cruise Berthing Facility Public Education Campaign. Some of the objectives outlined in the RFP include to “Factually address negative perceptions and misinformation and close perception gaps” and “Encourage involvement and support from public and private sector stakeholders, small and medium sized businesses and other industry partners and services providers to add further perspective to the campaign.”

Environmental Concerns being addressed

The Ministry of Tourism has also recently disclosed that the plan for the “dredge footprint” of the port has been reduced by 20% from 97,000 square meters to 68,000 square meters. A revised Environmental Impact Assessment will be carried out in the near future in addition to a number of surveys required for coral relocation and dredging.
