WATCH: Cayman's mangroves, our hidden heroes
By Tahiti Seymour and JD MacDonald
Mangroves, our hidden heroes. The powerhouse of our fishing industry, and guard against powerful storms.
With that being said, it should be of great concern that the Cayman Islands' mangrove population has declined by 70 per cent since the 1970s. This is an alarming figure, given how vital they are to our local ecosystems and overall environment. It is crucial for us as a society, to uphold a higher standard towards how we operate around our mangroves. Ignorance is no excuse for thoughtless behavior. These are our islands which we are hurting. We must take ownership of our actions and progress with a more conscious mindset.
Moving toward the future, our youth will be our greatest asset in the restoration and conservation of our verdant isle. We require more focus to be placed on these matters in our educational systems, both in the classroom and in the field.

Recently, we had a wonderful opportunity to explore our mangroves on a kayak tour, courtesy of the Ambassadors of the Environment group. The experience was incredibly eye-opening to the value that these beautiful trees hold. It’s programs such as these, that are essential towards creating a stronger relationship between an island and her people.
For those who are passionate or eager to get involved, the mangrove rangers is a newly founded initiative, working tirelessly in an effort to educate, protect, and conserve.
