Governor volunteers with the Meals on Wheels team in East End

This week, Governor Martyn Roper joined Jennifer West, Rob Imperato and the Meals on Wheels East End team, as they worked out of the William Allen McLaughlin Civic Centre in East End.

The menu of the day included split pea soup, fried fish, yellow rice, a tossed salad and homemade bread. Mr Roper helped to ladle out the soup and pack lunch boxes which were delivered to sixty households in the local District.

Lenecia, Jason and Janice of the East End kitchen crew cook the hot meals every day which are then delivered by volunteer drivers, who give up their time to deliver the food. The team also organises grocery bags for weekends.

The governor accompanied a volunteer driver to five of the addresses to deliver the boxes of food and met a wide number of individuals, all of whom have lived in East End for their entire lives.

"It was great to hear stories of their families; one gent could trace his family back to one of the first settlers from Scotland," said the governor.

"It was our privilege to have HE The Governor - Cayman Islands, Mr Martyn Roper join us in East End for a hands-on experience of what Meals on Wheels does every day, 52 weeks a year!" said the team at Meals on Wheels. "We all know how gracious and hard-working His Excellency is, but today he faced the Sahara dust and extreme heat during his first official MOW East End visit. From serving soups, packing meals, and personally handing meals to some very excited seniors, our governor proudly delivered hot nutritious meals and warm smiles. Thank you for being a champion for Meals on Wheels and for supporting our work in the community!"

Meals on Wheels provides a vital service to the people of Cayman Islands and has been invaluable during the COVID pandemic, serving as a lifeline to the people they visit.

Meals on Wheels provides hot meals and nutritious soups across all 5 districts in Grand Cayman for seniors, disabled, homebound, inferm and those in need of food security and has been serving Grand Cayman for over 22 years. The East End operation started about 20 years ago by Delmira Bodden, a Development Officer with the Department for Children and Family Services.

Meals on Wheels delivers at least 1000 hot meals and soups each day and in 2019, the service provided 60,000 hot meals to people in need.
