Described as skincare for the modern mom, the Matrescence modus operandi is simple, helping mothers take care of themselves even in the most challenging times.

By definition, matrescence is, according to Aurélie Athan, PhD “the process of becoming a mother”.

It was coined by Dana Raphael, PhD, in 1973, and is “a developmental passage where a woman transitions through pre-conception, pregnancy and birth, surrogacy or adoption, to the postnatal period and beyond.”

Athan also believes “…the exact length of matrescence is individual, recurs with each child, and may arguably last a lifetime!”

How’d this Jamaican redefine the term?

The word would later influence Jamaican-born Raquel Roxanne Nowak, to create Matrescence Skin, “for motherhood and beyond”.

Nowak is a Staten Island resident, who is married to investments executive Jakub Nowak, and a mother of two girls, Nahla (the elder) and Emilia.

The many hats she juggles daily include certified holistic nutritionist and prenatal health coach, but, years after creating Matrescence, it is still her baby.

The Matrescence story

“Matrescence was founded on the philosophy of “mothering the mother” and born to provide a practical application of self-care that can fit into a busy mom’s lifestyle,” a statement from the website reads.

“In skincare and in life, a woman should never have to choose between what’s good for her and what makes her feel good,” she writes.

She’s since been lauded for Matrescence by MotherMag, and most recently by Essence, where she was listed among the 75 Black-Owned Skin Care And Cosmetics Brands readers should shop with.

Quality assurance

Naturally, safety is a priority for the Matrescence chemists, which makes their products fully trusted and pregnancy-safe with the strictest standards.

Matrescence is made of “organic, wildcrafted, and plant-based” produce. These comprise pure, high-performance botanicals that are grown and processed with sustainable methods.

And, the audience is growing.
