Today's $140,000 charter to Canada is transporting 55 pets
A private charter set to deliver 95 Canadians living in Cayman to Pearson International Airport at 4.40 pm today will also be transporting 55 pets, some of which will be reunited with families who previously returned to Canada.
According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the $140,000 charter flight organized by Nikole Poirier is a 737-800 from Sunwing Airlines. Poirier told CBC that she has named the project the Noah's Ark project.
Poirier organized the flight when she learned that many Canadians were forced to leave Cayman without their pets and many would have to do the same unless special accommodations were made. Not only would this be heartbreaking for both the families and their dogs, but it would place a great deal of strain on the humane society and other dog charities that are already preparing for an influx of abandoned pets following the repatriation of many work permit holders who lost their jobs due to the pandemic.
Poirier is trying to organize a second charter from Cayman to Canada in July.
